What is your role at BFBS?

Broadcast Engineer

What brought you to BFBS?

I was seeking a new challenge and to progress my career as a Broadcast Engineer, which I've achieved at BFBS. I've also been able to add TV engineering to my extensive years in radio engineering. BFBS is about connecting with the audience and providing a bit of home to those overseas and that was also important to me.

Describe a typical working day

As a Broadcast Engineer, no two days are the same. I can go from fixing systems for our news teams to delivering news, maintaining studios for our on-air radio team to keeping TV systems going. Alongside the daily fixing and maintaining of systems and hardware, there are also many exciting projects and outside broadcasts to work on.

Planning and delivering outside broadcasts are my favourite part of the job because I investigate what is needed for the broadcast, building the kit to make it happen, having the adrenaline of maintaining the live feed and finishing with the satisfaction of the broadcast successfully being completed. Of course, there may be some bumps in the road to troubleshoot, but that is all part of the fun!

What's your favourite thing about life at BFBS?

BFBS are very good at ensuring the balance between work and personal life is maintained. There is also a great wellbeing provision at BFBS so you always feel supported.

What's it like working with the armed forces?

When I go to our studios or transmitters based within UK army barracks or at a forces sporting event where we set up for an outside broadcast, it always leaves me with a positive thought as they always have a smile to see BFBS.

What are your interests outside work?

Outside of work my interests are theatre, where at weekends and evenings I do technical support for theatre shows. I also enjoy going on adventures and attending music concerts. I also love to spend time with friends and family.
